The History of The Sparrow Guild

In 1896 a group of civic minded women formed the Women’s Hospital
Association of Ingham County.  They opened an 11-bed hospital that
eventually grew into the Edward W. Sparrow Hospital, built in 1912.

In 1924, the Sparrow Hospital Guild was formed to raise money
to service a free clinic which was discontinued in 1931. The Guild
Volunteers continued to raise funds for the hospital through the annual Charity Ball, auctions, and other initiatives throughout the decades.
Their emphasis was concentrated on pediatrics, women's health,
and cancer until recent years. It has now broadened to support
trauma, cardiovascular cervices, outpatient radiology, behavioral health and
the needs of various other departments to directly enhance Patient
care through their annually awarded “Guild Mini Grants".

How Does the Sparrow Guild Make an Impact?

Funds raised through the Sparrow Guild make a positive impact in the lives of Sparrow’s Patients, Caregivers and their Families in several ways, including:

Guild Mini Grants
The Guild Mini Grant Program supplies funds to support
numerous department
needs at both Sparrow Hospital and the
Sparrow St. Lawrence campus, awarding more than $150,000 so far.
Applications are submitted to the Sparrow Foundation by department
leaders who have worked with their Caregivers on their current needs.

Annual Signature Fundraiser: TGIF
The Guild’s Incredible Fundraiser is The Guild’s signature fundraising event
held in November of each year. Monies raised support Guild initiatives, highlighting a specified area of need in our community each year. Most recently,TGIF has generated more than $170,000 to help the Sparrow Thoracic Cardiovascular Institute (STCI) to acquire a cardiac nuclear camera, ensuring Sparrow’s Patients receive continued state-of-the-art heart care.
