The History of Sparrow Hospital Guild

In 1896 a group of civic minded women formed the Women’s Hospital Association
of Ingham County. They opened an 11-bed hospital that eventually grew
into the Edward W. Sparrow Hospital, built in 1912.

In 1924, Sparrow Hospital Guild was formed to raise money to service a free clinic

which was discontinued in 1931. The Guild volunteers continued to raise funds

for the hospitalthrough the annual charity ball, auctions, travel, and other initiatives

throughout the decades. Their emphasis concentrated on Pediatrics, Women,

and Cancer until recent years where it has broadened its support to Trauma,

Cardiovascular Services, Outpatient Radiology, Behavioral Health and needs

of various departments to enhance Patient care through annual “mini” grants.

How Does the Sparrow Hospital Guild Make an Impact?

Guild Mini Grants
The Guild Mini Grant Program supplies funds to support numerous department
needs in both Sparrow Hospital and the Sparrow St. Lawrence campus.
More than$150,000 has been awarded from applications submitted
by department leaders annually
through the Sparrow Foundation.

Annual Signature Fundraiser: TGIF
The Guild’s Incredible Fundraiser is the Guild’s signature fundraising event
held in November of each year. Monies raised support the Guild initiatives
as well as an area of highest need at Sparrow for the health care in our community.

Last year, the Guild was honored to present the lead gift commitment
of $50,000 for a new and innovative program at
Sparrow, the Senior Navigation Hub,
to assist seniors and their families coordinate sustainable health care plans.
The Senior Navigation Hub opened in May and is transforming how we care
for seniors in our community.  The Guild is renewing their
commitment of $50,000 to the Senior Hub this year.
